My name is Bethan Bray, an artist living and working from my home studio nestled right on the edge of the Cairngorms National Park in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
I am a painter and craftswoman, working with materials of the Earth and ancient methods of land-based creativity to restore deep intimacy with place.
Aside from painting, my work is in devotion to old ways of being and creating - working primarily in the realm of hide tanning + leather working. I am devoted to Craft as ancestral remembrance, and to honouring both the practical and ritualistic aspects of making ~ Using hands and heart to connect in a tangible way to those who have come before us, and to the plants and animals with which we share this Earth.
Myself and my partner run a small traditional tannery here in the Highlands, one of Scotland’s last Tanneries to produce bark tanned sheepskins and deer leather. We transform raw animal skins into functional leather that will last a lifetime and beyond - hides which, as a by-product of the meat industry, would usually be left to go to waste and end up in landfill. It is our deepest devotion to tend to these hides with reverence and respect, using only natural materials such as oak bark and limestone. It is these home-tanned sheepskins, deerskins and rawhide that I use to lovingly craft from, and paint onto.
We also run courses and gatherings, which are primarily focused around land-based living and heritage crafts ~ creating safe spaces to explore what it truly means to return home to the land and to each other.
